10 Ideas for meeting your neighbors

Talk to anyone that lives in a suburb in America and you'll hear the same complaint... Why can't we seem to get to know our neighbors and why can't there be a greater sense of community.  I have to be honest with you, every once and a while, there was a sense of guilt that floods by body when I think about our house buying choice, wishing I would have a bought in a greater need area.  But that feeling quickly dissipates when I consider the great need right where we live.  Yes, they are nicer houses, but the spiritual need is still there.

Consider your own neighborhood.  Do you fellowship in your own community, or do you travel a ways to get to church, passing by the people in your own community.

So how can we get to know neighbors with just a little effort and discipline?  According to Acts 17, God has appointed the very place and time of where you live.  So maybe God wants to use you in your own neighborhood for the sake of the gospel.

Here are 10 things you can do to meet your neighbors and build relationship with them.

  1. Host a dessert with a focus on the 10 houses right around you.
  2. Invite your neighbors in on a coat drive.  Download a comprehensive guide here.
  3. Host a Bible Study.
  4. Start a neighborhood directory.
  5. Consider starting a kids time at a local coffee shop.
  6. Start a neighborhood tool library.  Thank you Kevin for this idea.
  7. Distribute cookies to neighbors with the purpose of finding out there name.
  8. During Halloween night, provide a bigger party that just candy.  Provide cider for parents and have a fire going in a fire pit in your front lawn.
  9. During the holidays, invite a someone over who may not have family around.
  10. Keep your eye out for neighbors doing specific projects and over to help... like roofing, fencing, or yard work.

It's easy to build relationship with our neighbors, but it does take a plan of attack.  We are all to busy to let it just happen.  If we don't plan, it won't happen.  If you have other ideas, please let me know.
